After the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955 was passed, marriage can now be viewed as a contract instead of the sacrament it formerly was in Hindu society.
However, caste and sub-caste are still the customary grounds for marriage. Therefore, marriage and the caste system, which has its roots in religion, are closely intertwined.
Marriages between different castes can be considered one of the key steps in eradicating "untouchability," reducing caste discrimination, and promoting principles like liberty, equality, and fraternity across society.
Marriage Scheme 2023: Inter-caste Marriages
The important features of Marriage Scheme of 2023 for inter-caste marriage are as follows-
The Marriage Scheme is intended to evaluate the couples' socially audacious move and assist them in settling in during the early stages of marriage.
The couple must be getting married for the first time in order to take advantage of this programme.
Additionally, the couple must submit their proposal within a year of the marriage being registered under the virtue of the Hindu Marriage Act.
The requirement that the newly married couple's combined income not be more than 5 lakh rupees has now been removed by the central government. As a result, there are currently no requirements or income caps to use this scheme's benefits.
Every relationship where either the bride or the groom is a Scheduled caste will now earn 2.5 lakh rupees as a result.
They can obtain this money after providing the relevant Ministry with their combined bank account information and their Aadhar numbers.
The goal for each state is set in relation to the number of Scheduled Castes (SC) people that live there. States may, however, go above this limit while still receiving approval.
Eligibility Criteria to apply for 2.5 Lakhs in Inter Caste Marriage
The eligibility criteria to apply for 2.5 lakhs in inter-caste marriage under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment are as follows-
For the purposes of this Scheme, an inter-caste marriage is one in which one spouse is of a non-scheduled caste and the other spouse is of a scheduled caste.
The union must be legally recognized and properly registered in accordance with the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955. The pair would file an affidavit stating that they have been legally married and in a marital alliance.
On a second or subsequent marriage, there is no bonus.
A proposal will be regarded as legitimate if it is made within one year of getting married.
The decision to approve the reward for the Couple would be up to the Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment and Chairman of the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation.
False or fraudulent data shall be punished in compliance with the law if it is submitted to the proper authority.
Scope of Incentives
The incentive for a legitimate inter-caste marriage is 2.50 lakh rupees per union. Upon receipt of a receipt with a pre-stamped invoice on non-judicial paper costing 1.50 lakh rupees of the incentive sum would be paid to eligible couples' joint bank accounts via RTGS or NEFT. For three years, the remaining amount will be retained in a fixed deposit.
The Scheme was initially conducted as a pilot programme for two years, from 2013-2014 to 2014-2015. Then, starting in April 2015, the programme was maintained as a regular programme. In 2020, it was later amended.
The District Authorities would receive Rs. 25,000 for each marriage in exchange for hosting a ceremony during which the couple would receive their incentive.
Therefore, the scheme's goal is to recognize the newlyweds' socially daring decision to be married to someone from a different caste and to provide them with financial support so they can settle down during the early stages of their marriage.
It is made clear that it shouldn't be regarded as an additional programme to one that creates jobs or reduces poverty.
